The “Pearl Pagoda”, popular in the theatre world for more than 60 years as one of the most representative classic plays of Xi Opera, has been well received and highly commended by the public. The industry and audiences have praised the show for its longevity as “the gift that keeps on giving.”

Premiered in 1956, it was regarded as a successful example of theatre reform. In 1989, it won the first China Gold Record Award. In 2004, it was commercially performed in Singapore. In 2018, “Pearl Pagoda·Presenting the Pagoda” was unveiled at the Chinese Opera New Year Gala in China. Its success has played a crucial role in the development and dissemination of the Binbin tune, created by Wang Binbin, and the Mei School, created by Mei Lanzhen, two genres of Xi Opera.

The “Pearl Pagoda” tells the story of a young man, Fang Qing, who, facing family decline, is ridiculed after borrowing from his aunt. Poor as he is, he is all the more determined in adversity and by no means gives up his ambition. Eventually, he braves difficulties and wins the title of Zhuangyuan through hard work. In the end, Fang makes peace with his aunt and marries his elder female cousin Chen Cui’e.
